Hey guys! My name is Andy and I'm in the NLC Class of 2011. I love doing tons of things like playing guitar, piano, and singing in chorus. I play football for my school's team. I'm a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. I also like computers, yo-yoing, and solving Rubik's Cubes. Some other interests I have are rock climbing, skiing, biking, and water skiing.
I joined NLC last year because it sounded like a fun experience and it definitely has been! Last summer we went to Adventure Unlimited Camps for two weeks and peaked a 14,000 ft mountain, rafted, mountain biked, and canoed. We also learned a lot about what it takes to be a true leader.
NLC has helped me grow mentally and spiritually. Last year I had an awesome healing of stomach ache while I was at camp with the rest of my NLC class. I had been learning about Jesus' teachings and Christian leadership when one night I woke up with a severe stomach ache. I tried to just ignore it, but when that didn't work I started to pray. I sang hymns to myself because they have always helped me to calm my thought and become more in tune with God. Next, I prayed to know that God is All, and he doesn't make pain; He wants His children to be peaceful and happy. Therefore, I couldn't have any pain. Next, I affirmed that there was no resistance to my prayers and they were effective. I stuck to these ideas and a few minutes later, I realized my stomach wasn't hurting any more! I went back to sleep thanking God for the great, quick healing.
So, if you're not sure about whether or not to try NLC, I'd say to go for it! It can't hurt to try and you'll probably be really glad you did. The kids are really nice and you'll get to do lots of fun activities. Hope to see you in NLC!

Hello, my name is Ariana. I am one of five in my family, not including my sweetie-pie dog named Carmel. In my family, we are all into sports. Recently, though, my older brother has become very associated with music. My younger brother and I are very into any sport we can get our feet, hands or head into… and we live for it. Every morning at school I have Physical Education. Earlier this year we enjoyed basketball and badminton, and now we’re doing volleyball, which I love. Later, I look forward to swimming, more basketball, and, I believe, track and field. That’s just for our PE program. I had the opportunity earlier this year to be a sprinter on the JV girl’s water polo team. I enjoyed myself thoroughly and am attending a water polo camp at a school about a half hour away from school. In the spring I hope to either do lacrosse or swimming. During the winter, I love to snowboard. It was not possible for me to join the team but it is something that definitely inspires me.
Another large factor in my life at the moment is being freshman class Secretary on Student Council. We meet every Wednesday morning before school and do community service throughout the year. It is great to be a part of something like that because I am connected and know what is going on in the school.
I love to be a role model for my peers and hope to be a great leader some day. In fact, for my electives this year I chose Leadership and Spanish. School is going quite well. There are some challenges, but they’re usually overcome by hard work and aspiring to get good grades. Although I rarely have time to write stories, I also love to do that as well.
One of the most important things in my life is my religion. I attend Sunday School regularly and love learning more about Christian Science with my two fellow classmates. My friends help me a lot with various things, and it would be hard to get along without their loving support. :)
My name is Brian and I am a part of the NLC 2011 group. I love going to dances and hanging out with friends.
Every summer I go to Montana to get my country roots exposed. I enjoy ATV riding and hearing my granddad’s war stories. My grandmother volunteers at a wild life refuge and I enjoy learning about nature and native birds of Montana from her. I often go to my other grandparent’s home in central Oregon (SunRiver) where I play pickup basketball and baseball games.
During my free time I like to play the piano and drums. My favorite subject at school is law, and I would like to become a lawyer when I’m older. I am really into basketball and soccer. Team sports have always been a big thing to me. Music is my passion. When I’m not in class I’m probably listening to my iPod.
Hi. My name is Catherine. I am fourteen years old. I am the middle child in my family. I have two brothers and a cat.
I like to play soccer, listen to music, throw a football with my brothers, and camp. I play soccer for a challenge soccer team in my area. I listen to pretty much all music, especially country. I like going to Adventure Unlimited in the summer and traveling. I like to try new things and I am pretty much up for anything!
I love my family and friends. My cousin, Lindsey, and I are in the NLC program together, which is great.
I am a freshman. High school has been new and exciting so far. School is very important to me. My best subject is probably math, though I like social studies. I would like to attend the University of North Carolina (UNC). I am not sure what I would like to do when I grow up.
Hello. I’m Drew S. Sterrett. I am 15 years old. I am from New York City and am now living in St. Louis. I play soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, tennis, and golf. I love hanging out and playing with friends. My hobbies are sports and playing video games. My favorite colors are neon blue and green. My pet peeve is people who chew with their mouths open. I love traveling and living each day to its best. If I had a super power, it would be able to stop time and to be invincible. I am a Go Green supporter.

Hey, my name is Emily. I'm in the NLC class of 2011, and I love it.
Some of my favorite things to do are hang out with friends and family, visit new places, and act. I love taking pictures, watching movies, reading, drawing, and playing sports. Some of the sports I have played in the past are softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, running, and swimming. Right now, I'm still trying to find the sport that's right for me. I enjoy any kind of outdoor activities, and I always like trying new things. My favorite places to go are the beach, and the lake on which my grandparents live.
I have an 11-year-old younger sister, a dog, 2 cats, and a rabbit. I love being with my family, and all of my relatives. My friends are also really important to me, and I love being with them, including my NLC family. I am so happy to be a part of this group.

Hey, this is Ian! Juggling. It is as if I’m only good at doing stuff if I’m multitasking. I juggle schoolwork, video games, relationships, sports, and volunteering.
If you walked into my room, you would see me eating, playing video games, petting the cat, doing homework, and talking on the phone (my headset speaks to me!)…all at once. I can’t go from my room upstairs down to the kitchen without running into my mom, dad, sister, grandma, grandpa, or uncle…or tripping over my three cats or pet rock, Gorgnet. My sister, the Japanese-American guru, just spent two weeks in Japan and is currently at the Principia Upper School.
My second life is a virtual one, and I play an online role-playing game where I work with people from all over the world…including a friend from Canada (the pet rock’s namesake). When I do get up from my desk, you may find me napping, swimming, skating, procrastinating…and flicking pencils at the ceiling.
After playing video games until 7 AM Sunday morning, I leave for Sunday School at 9 AM. With the 2-6 people in my class, I talk about praying for ourselves, using Science and Health, and horses.
As far as school goes, I actually enjoyed reading the Odyssey and To Kill a Mockingbird. In Aerospace class we’ve learned how to fly on the flight simulator.
My friends outside the online world have multiplied because I’ve switched schools so many times—five schools in seven years.
A nice superpower to have would be teleportation so that when I take a food break, I’m not away from my computer for very long! My goal is to travel the world…the world of Warcraft! A lot of what I have learned about leadership has been from cooperating with others online.
Hi, my name is Kim and I am in the NLC 2011 class. In the summer I love to go to camp Bow-Isle. Next year will be my sixth year returning and I still find myself experiencing new things. At camp there are only about 30 campers, which allows everyone to become close friends. I have two older brothers. One is attending Principia College and the other graduated from The University of Washington. I have visited Prin and I certainly would like to go when I am in college.
Catching the bus at 6:45 in the morning is not my favorite thing but that is how I get to school. At school I am in the band, playing the flute for my fourth year. In addition, I play basketball, soccer and run track & field. In track my events are the high jump, discus and two different relays. I love to be involved with my school and I am in Honor Society and in Key Club, which is a community service group. I have been skiing since I was three years old and I love it! My Grandma lives in at ski resort in Deer Valley, Utah. Every year my mom’s side of the family gets together for a couple weeks and we go skiing. I have never been snowboarding but I am always willing to try new things.
I am so excited to be in The National Leadership Council and just love it! The NLC has given me many opportunities for spiritual growth. I have also become more active in my community and have learned many skills about how to be a good leader. Christian Science has helped me overcome many limitations especially at camp, where the environment is so positive. I am so grateful for and appreciative of Christian Science because I have had many opportunities for healing and growth.
Lauren
Hey, my name is Lauren and I’m in the NLC Class of 2011! I’m very involved with musical theater, and have been since I was five. I have performed in 25 productions in the nine years I’ve been onstage. Most of my extra-curricular activities take place around musical theater, and when I’m in a production there are 2 or 3 rehearsals every week. I’ve taken tap and jazz dance classes for 6 years and I also take voice lessons each week. My favorite thing to do in the world is sing! As a profession, I would like to become a singer, perform on Broadway, or become a fashion or interior designer.
I am currently attending a public high school as a freshman, where I am involved with the drama program. I take seven classes and I enjoy Geometry and Geography the most.
I really enjoy going to Sunday School every week. I’m the youngest of the four teens in my class, but we get along really well together! My Sunday School teacher always has great inspirational ideas for us, and I believe that being in Sunday School is the most important hour of the week.
Participating in DiscoveryBound events and being in the NLC has really made me more aware of Christian Science. Reading the Bible Lesson as frequently as I can has helped me in so many ways. Also, Adventure Unlimited Ranches in Colorado has opened so many “windows to God” for me—just as their logo says--and has inspired me to be more active as a Christian Scientist. I’m really grateful for the NLC experience – I’ve made 19 best friends that I’ll have for a lifetime!
Lena
I’m Anna-Lena Dorette Barbara Hathaway. I was born at home in Boston, Massachusetts during a blizzard everyone was calling the Storm of the Century! When I was a baby, my parents would get me from childcare right after the Sunday service and bring me up to listen to the amazing postludes on The Mother Church organ.
Now I live in sunny Southern California with my German mom and American dad, two sisters (Sophia-Annette and Hannah), one brother (Niklas), two big Dobermans, two geckos, a tarantula, and my cat Baboo. My mother was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany where my grandmother is a Christian Science practitioner. My father grew up in the United States, but has traveled a lot and studied in Sweden. My mom and dad decided to marry three days after they first met and got married in Denmark two months later. I have dual citizenship (German and U.S.) and am bilingual in German and English. I hope to go to university in Berlin where my cousins live.
I have been playing the flute for about seven years and am a student at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in downtown Los Angeles. I love sports and jumped around from gymnastics, softball, swimming, and soccer, but then I found water polo. I play on a club team for the City of Los Angeles and practice two-and-a-half hours every day. I am a starter on the Varsity water polo team at South Pasadena High School. I really enjoy my water polo teammates and the intense competition. I also enjoy reading books and especially like good detective stories and mysteries.
Although our Sunday School is busy, sometimes I am the only 9th grader so I get one-on-one time with my teacher. My high school is four miles up and down hills from my home, so we car pool with neighbors to school and back. If I could have a superpower, I would like to be able to travel anywhere instantly and read and speak all languages. Then I could go anywhere with no hassles and fit right in.
Lindsey:
Hi my name is Lindsey. I have one older sister (Lauren) and a younger sister (Carolyn). My parents are so amazing; they are so helpful with everything. They help me pursue my dreams and make life very easy. One of my favorite things to do is play sports. My favorite sports are Volleyball and Track, although I also enjoy playing softball and swimming. Another thing I love to do is travel. When my family travels together, we camp either in a tent or more recently in an RV. Normally when we travel we go to National Parks in the United States because we enjoy the great facilities they have. They also have a program for kids called the Junior Rangers program that I always complete whenever we go to any of the parks. When possible, I enjoy listening to a variety of music. I like county, rock, pop, and rap. Some of my favorite artists are Jonas Brothers, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts and Chris Brown.
I have been a Girl Scout since 2nd grade and last year earned the Girl Scout Silver Award. During the summer, I attended Adventure Unlimited Camps in Colorado and had a wonderful time working with/getting to know other NLC members. This year I began to work on requirements towards my Girl Scout Gold Award and the Congressional Awards as part of the NLC program.
Lyssa:
My name is Lyssa. I have been in the NLC program for one year. I enjoy knowing many teenagers who practice Christian Science all over the country. I have met these teens by attending eighth grade at The Principia Middle School, enjoying 8 summers at camp Newfound, one summer at the A/U Ranches, participating in my local chapter of Discovery bound, being a participant in the NLC program, and enjoying the company of my family and school friends. Each of these unique individuals I have met is very different which adds to my appreciation of how having diverse people as friends helps to broaden how I look at the world.
As you now know, I go to Newfound (a camp in Maine) every summer, unfortunately it looks as though I won’t be going this summer because my high school marching band and color guard have been invited to play for the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing China which is very exciting but will keep me from Maine this year.
As well as being in my High School band, I play for my High School volleyball team, and in the spring I have a spot on my track and field team where I will do shot putt and discus. As well as enjoying my friends, my yellow lab is named Tahoe after the lake in California where I used to live. He runs away everyday to be with his doggie friends and when he runs home his ears flap along with his body fat. I am already a member of The Mother Church. Following the example set by my parents (who have been members of many branch churches all over the country) I will be applying to be a member of my church in Northern New England.
In my free time, I spend time with my closest friends whom I have danced with for 9 years. I downhill ski during the winter and water ski in the summer. I am hoping I will get hired to work at a local ski “hill” this winter giving ski lessons. You know what, I am so happy to be a part of NLC, and if you get the chance to apply for the National Leadership Program, I really recommend it. Not only is it fun and educational, it looks great on a college application!
Olivia
Hi, my name is Olivia. I live in Seattle, and I can’t imagine not playing sports. I play soccer, basketball, and ultimate frisbee. I’m a defender for a select soccer team which is tons of fun, but a lot of hard work, too! I also take clarinet lessons.
Goofing off with my friends is one of my favorite things to do. I have a sister who boards at Principia while I live with my parents, a dog named Lily, and a cat named Milo. I like water sports like wakeboarding, waterskiing, and swimming. Chances are if you pick any country, I’ll like food from there, but I especially like Italian food.
I am the only Sunday School student (in the 7/8 grade class) who goes every week, but there are two others who come fairly frequently and one that comes occasionally. I have a carpool to school, me and another girl, and our parents alternate driving.
If I could have a super power, I would want to be able to fly because then I could have all sorts of freedom… I could fly to my friend’s houses without needing a ride, fly to the top of a tree to watch a sunset, do a really cool dive with lots of spins and flips into the water, and fly through traffic while all the car drivers would have to wait. You have to admit, that sounds pretty cool!
I’m really looking forward to all the NLC activities coming up in the next couple years!

Hi! I’m Scott. I enjoy video games, reading, art, and soccer. Unfortunately, my life revolves more around schoolwork than fun, but I deal with it. I work hard to maintain good grades and I have lots of friends. I value wisdom, intelligence, and logic above physical strength, but I still exercise plenty. I believe it is man’s greatest gift to be able to enlighten others. Without that, society as we know it would not exist.
I also enjoy studying our past, especially the dark ages. Good architecture is one of the most beautiful forms of art, and I intend to study architecture in college.
